  History of Dubai

World is getting global and so does the mental status of people. Regions are no more earthed under secrets and they are actually outsourced to the magic wands of computers. There have been many global business centers but the city that comes first to our mind is, Dubai, a city center for many business houses which feeds millions of dreamers.

Being the major part consisting of sand dunes rolling over the foothills of Hajar Mountains in the east, it has tremendously developed in last two decades. Going back to history, it takes several mysteries in its lap of about how it was named. As such very little is known about pre-Islamic culture. There are several theories that originated with time about the origin of its name. Some people say that it is a combination of the Farsi words for two and brothers, referring to Diera and bur Dubai. Some others call this name to be extracted from the word money as it has always been a trade center.

Whatever the story may lie behind the origin of name, we definitely believe it to be the most attractive commercial centre throughout the world. During 18th century, Dubai is said to be a small fishing and trading village. In 1833 Al Maktuom family settled in Dubai when members of Al Bu Falasah secede from Abu Dhabi. Sheik Maktoum being young ruled Dubai well and soon it became a flourishing coastal town. As it developed it got divided into three districts namely Diera, Bur Dubai and Sindhagda.

Donkeys and camels were a source for transportation which leads to better business terms. However a small wooden boat was soon invented as crossing the creek went a long way. These small travel boats were known as abras which provided transportation to not only the goods but also the people of old Dubai.

Traditionally, people of Dubai used to live in huts made up from palm fronds which were enlightened through candles and lamps. These fishing villages gradually started flourishing and made a move towards modern Dubai in 19th century.

With the advent of electricity in 1852 it got a spark of modernization and commercialization. However, it always lacked the productive land due to which the inhabitants choose to be the sea dwellers and invested in fishing, pearling and other sea trade. With that, sufficient port trade developed till 20th century which proved to be a boon for this emirate.

With the 20th century, it got big enough to attract trade from Iraq, India and Baluchistan. However, Diera turned out to be the largest coast with over 350 shops. The facilities and freedom soon made Dubai a heaven for business men and merchants. Soon increasing population of many countries made people to settle over there, especially people with instincts of trade. By 1930, there was mix population in Dubai near about a quarter of foreign population.

Its high contacts and skills of oil mills lead to early and rapid development of this emirate.
